A Life Below the Threshold? Examining Conflict Between Ethical Principles and Parental Values In Neonatal Treatment Decision Making

Three common ethical principles for establishing the limits of parental authority in pediatric treatment decision making are the harm principle, the principle of best interest, and the threshold view. This paper consider how these principles apply to a case of a premature neonate with multiple significant comorbidities whose mother wanted all possible treatments, and whose health care providers wondered whether it would be ethically permissible to allow him to die comfortably despite her wishes. Whether and how these principles help to understand what was morally right for the child is questioned. The paper concludes that the principles were of some value in understanding the moral geography of the case, but that the case reveals common bioethical principles for medical decision making are problematically value-laden because they are inconsistent with the widespread moral value of medical vitalism

Theological Foundations of Pastoral Care in Catholic Universities

One defining element of life in any Catholic educational institution, whether it be primary, secondary, or tertiary, is the focus on pastoral care for staff and students. This paper provides a distinctly Catholic definition of the term ‘pastoral care’ and briefly examines the theological foundations that underpin this concept, particularly, in relation to its application in the Catholic university. The paper traces the motif of pastoral care through the Scriptures and, building on insights from St. Pope John Paul II’s Apostolic Constitution on Catholic Universities, Ex Corde Ecclesiae (1990) and the broader theological anthropology of the Vatican II Council. The paper highlights that pastoral care is not something of an extrinsically added offering to students in a Catholic educational institution, but rather something intrinsically built into its fabric

Experiences of taking students on business trips: with recommendations for organising successful business trips

These works may not be re-posted without the explicit permission of the copyright holders.Visits to businesses provide an opportunity for students to see first-hand how different operations are managed, particularly in areas not often seen, such as manufacturing. They can be linked with classroom learning and teaching and can also provide opportunities for work- related assessment. This paper presents the outcome of a teaching and learning project that aimed to take a number of undergraduate and postgraduate business students from the University of Hertfordshire on a variety of operations-related business trips during the academic year 2009/2010. The organisation of these trips is described and they are evaluated by students. It is demonstrated that such trips take some time to get organised but can be run on virtually no budget and are very well received by students. A model for the development and implementation of business trips is presented
